Canterbury

There are many activities for international students in Canterbury! This year, Iris Ho is the local Friends International Reach volunteer. Contact her for more details on the events below.

Global Café

Saturdays 7:30-10:30pm, at Café Oasis in St Andrew’s Church, Watling Street

A free café for internationals at the heart of Canterbury every Saturday evening. It is the perfect place to relax, experience cultures and make friends from all over the world! Come along to say hello, practise English, have a cup of tea or coffee, enjoy refreshments or interesting international food, play table tennis or games. We also offer a short Bible study in simple English for those who are interested. Global Café is run by Link International and local Christians. For this term’s programme or more information, please contact Jonny Wylie.

International Coffee Morning

Mondays 9am-12pm, in St Stephen's Church Hall, Hales Drive

A weekly coffee morning for all international people, come at any time and stay as long as you like. Tea Tasting, Basic French, Roll Your Own Sushi, Planting Bulbs are among many interesting themes we have. Children under care are most welcome! International Coffee Morning is run by Link International, please email Ronnie and Miho Iliffe for more information.

The VISA Course

For internationals, in simple English.

An opportunity to discover what Christians believe, to discuss and ask questions in a relaxed atmosphere. We welcome internationals from anywhere, any religious backgrounds (or none) to join our 8 week course, on Monday evenings, in a local home. On the VISA course, you will meet people from different countries, share delicious dinners, find answers to your questions, and are likely to form long lasting friendships here! A visa allows us to enter and explore a country; the VISA course is a great adventure to explore the Christian faith. The course is free and happens every term, for more information email Iris Ho.

International Bible Study Groups

There are various Bible study groups for internationals to explore what the Bible says, whether you know a lot or a little about the Bible, there will be a group for you!

C
anterbury Baptist Church runs a friendship and Bible study group for international students and young adults. The group meets on Wednesdays at 7.30pm in a local home for English conversations and a Bible discussion. To find out more or come along, please contact Becky Beatham.

There is an informal weekly Bible study group for friends of Global Café, in simple English. We welcome everyone, especially newcomers. For when and where the group meets, please get in touch with Jonny Wylie.

Christian Unions

If you are an international student at one of the universities in Canterbury, the Christian Union at your university would love to meet you, get to know you and look after you! Simply send a message to: Christ Church University Christian Union, Kent University Christian Union, University for the Creative Arts Christian Union.

Family Link

Would you like to be linked up with a local family?

Surrounded by books and students? Feeling slightly homesick? We understand how it feels being an international student – exciting and rewarding, but sometimes realising how far away you are from home. We would love to make your experience of the UK a warm and unforgettable one. So do many British families in Canterbury! Family Link can link you up with a local family who wants to get to know you, invite you into their home, share home cooked meals with you, and learn about your country. It is a great opportunity to gain an insight into British customs, culture and family life, not mentioning the pleasant company of children! If you are interested in Family Link, whether you are an international or a local family, please contact Iris Ho.

Day Trips and Weekends Away

Did you know Kent is widely known as the “Garden of England” because of its abundance of orchards and gardens? Kent and nearby Surrey and Sussex have many beautiful and interesting places to visit – English houses, castles, museums, gardens, forests and seaside. We organise day trips for internationals to explore places in Southeast England or further away. On weekends away, we not only visit places, but also have the chance to stay with host families in that area and enjoy many activities together! For more information, please email Iris Ho.

Canterbury Chinese Christian Fellowship (CCCF)

CCCF has a Sunday service (Cantonese/Mandarin) on the 3rd Sunday of every month at 2pm in St Andrew’s Church, Watling Street, with lunch beforehand at 1pm.

CCCF runs two Bible study groups in Cantonese/Mandarin/English in St Andrew’s Church, Watling Street. One group meets every other Wednesday at 1.30pm and another group meets on Fridays at 7.45pm. CCCF also organises social activities for young people – Chinese meals, trips, film nights, badminton and more! All events and activities are free, just come along or contact Samling Dorward.

We hope to see you at the café soon! For more details, please contact Iris.
